Joe Alston played tennis under Coach James W. Younge and basketball under Coach Floyd Brown, playing on two CIAA visitation (regular season) championship teams.

Alston sank the free throws against Florida A&M University in 1958 to earn the Eagles a berth in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals.

In 1966, Alston was named a physical education teacher and coach of tennis and basketball at Johnson C. Smith University. As Smith’s head basketball coach, he compiled a record of 86 wins and 41 losses, the best of any coach at that institution through that time. He was NAIA District 26 Basketball Coach of the Year in 1969, and CIAA Basketball Coach of the Year in 1972. His 1974 Golden Bulls were CIAA Southern Division champions and runners-up at the CIAA Tournament. Alston led Smith’s tennis team to a CIAA championship in 1968.

Alston also served as NCCU’s Athletics Director for one year, 1975-76.
