John Baker played on the Eagle football teams from 1954 to 1957. All four of those seasons were winning ones, but the giant lineman came into his own in 1956 and 1957, when he was named to both the All-CIAA and the Pittsburgh Courier All-American first teams.
He subsequently starred in professional football with the Los Angeles Rams, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Detroit Lions, retiring after 12 years.
Baker spent most of his career in government, starting as a recreation supervisor for the North Carolina Department of Corrections. He was elected Sheriff of his native Wake County in 1978.
