Jerome Floyd Gantt played first string defensively and offensively for the NCCU Eagles between 1966 and 1969, and was named to the first team All-CIAA squad in 1969. In 1970, he was rated as one of college football’s top ten senior defensive linemen, and was a first-round draft choice of the Buffalo Bills on the NFL. He was a part-time starter at offensive guard and tackle for the Bills in the 1970-71 season. He played in the Canadian Football League from 1972 to 1974, starting at tackle for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in their Grey Cup championship team in 1972, and for the Montreal Allouettes on their 1974 Grey Cup championship team. He played for the Charlotte Hornets in the World Football League in 1975.

Gantt earned his bachelor of science degree from NCCU and received a master of science degree in business management from Central Michigan University in 1984.
