James W. Younge was the tennis coach at North Carolina College and North Carolina Central University from 1949 to 1975, 26 years. In that time the Eagles won five CIAA championships, four MEAC championships, two NAIA District 26 championships, and one NCAA Eastern Regional championship. Dr. Younge was named Coach of the Year in the CIAA in 1959, in the NAIA in 1970 and 1971, and by the MEAC in 1975.
Dr. Younge had been professor of physical education, served as director of athletics at NCCU from 1959 to 1975, and served as chairman of the physical education department from 1967 to 1968. He also served as interim president of Livingstone College and interim commissioner of the MEAC.
