James H. "Fuzzy Williams was for two years co-captain of the Eagle squads (1940 and 1941). He played safety for the 1941 team which went undefeated in the regular season, lost a Peach Bowl game to Morris Brown College, and then lost the entire record with the discovery that one of the NCCU players was ineligible. He served as head football and basketball coach at Elizabeth City State College, a department and athletic chairman at Bethune Cookman College, and a faculty member at Delaware State College. At Delaware State he was also head baseball coach, chairman of the health and physical education department, and director of athletics.
