James W. “Chips” Sligh scored 1,229 points for the basketball Eagles of North Carolina College between 1953 and 1958, and ranks second among the Eagles in number of games played. He was an all-CIAA player for the Eagles.
He holds the bachelor of science degree from North Carolina Central University, and has also studied counseling at St. Johns University in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Sligh has worked as a youth counselor for the New York City Welfare Department and the New York City Youth Board, has been a science teacher, physical education instructor, and dean for two high schools. He left New York City’s Jackie Robinson Jr. High School in 1984 to become a resident of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and a physical education instructor at John H. Woodson Jr. High School.
