Irwin "Bus" Holmes was a halfback with the Eagles from 1930 to 1933, and won All-CIAA honors and a listing on the Negro All-American team during his stellar career. He subsequently served as an assistant coach at NCCU from 1939 to 1942.
He was a long-time recreation official in the City of Durham, completing his career with the Recreation Department in 1965, as supervisor of recreation and assistant director of recreation for the city. He also worked for the city in a variety of other posts.
He received his master's degree from NCC in 1956 and served as a visiting professor at the university in the early 1960s. He was a life member of the NCCU Alumni Association which he had served as president.
