North Carolina Central University Athletics

Internationally-renowned artist Ernie Barnes, best known for his paintings as seen on the 1970s sitcom "Good Times," played football at North Carolina Central University from 1956-59.

Following his collegiate career at NCCU, Barnes was selected by the Baltimore Colts in the 1960 NFL Draft. He went on to play with the New York Jets (1960), San Diego Chargers (1961-62) and Denver Broncos (1963-64) before concentrating on his artwork. His autobiography "From Pads to Palette" chronicles his transition from athlete to artist.

His famous 1971 "Sugar Shack" dance scene appeared on the "Good Times" television show and on the Marvin Gaye album "I Want You."

In 1984, Barnes was appointed official sports artist for the Games of the XXIII Olympiad in Los Angeles. (His other honors and achievements are too numerous to mention here, but more details are available at www.ErnieBarnes.com)

Born and raised in Durham, N.C., Barnes passed away on April 27, 2009, at the age of 70.
