Eagles Conquer Cougars for Second Straight Win

BOX SCORE

ORLANDO, Fla. — Junior Gabriel Cucalon coasted to wins in both singles and doubles play to propel the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team to a 4-3 non-conference victory over Chicago State University at the USTA National Campus Thursday afternoon.

Cucalon posted a flawless 6-0 doubles win with junior classmate Sebastian Bromley and then rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 singles triumph positioned second in the Eagles' lineup.

The sweep by Cucalon and Bromley sealed the first team point in favor of the maroon and gray as the Cougars only had five active players. The surging duo of Cucalon and Bromley have rattled off four straight wins for the Eagles.

NCCU (2-9 Overall) once again got strong play atop its singles lineup. Cucalon (5-6) inched the Eagles within one point of the team victory with his straight-set win over senior Rohan Wattley.

Sophomore Theofanis Kontopoulos clinched the match for the Eagles in the No. 1 slot. Kontopoulos tallied his team-high sixth win in a seesaw 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 success against a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) all-league honoree in junior Felix Savard.

Kontopoulos (6-5) has played six straight matches that have gone the full distance of three sets and he is 5-1 over that span.

Senior No. 4 Christian Gonzalez put the Cougars on the board with a straight-set win.

Chicago State (4-11) squeaked out a pair of three-set victories on courts three and five to close the final margin of defeat to just one point. Freshman George Botha slipped past Bromley by a score of 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 while sophomore Cody Wurzelbacher needed a third-set tiebreaker to nip sophomore Brooks Campbell by a tally of 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5).

NCCU next hosts Morgan State University on Saturday, March 24 at 3 p.m.
