DURHAM, N.C. — The Gardner-Webb University men's tennis team spoiled the home opener for North Carolina Central University with a 7-0 non-conference win on Friday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs improved to 3-4 and the Eagles fall to 0-2.
 
NCCU sophomore 
Theofanis Kontopoulos was involved in the tightest singles match of the day on the second court. Freshman Millen Hurrion eventually prevailed over Kontopoulos by a competitive 7-5, 6-3 margin.
 
Junior Maximilian Scholl (6-0), who is ranked No. 98 in the latest ITA singles rankings released this week, remained undefeated on the season by topping NCCU No. 1 
Gabriel Cucalon in straight set scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Cucalon (0-2) has played a nationally ranked player in each of his first two matches.
 
Senior No. 3 Paul Hogan, senior No. 4 Adam Schmidt and sophomore No. 5 Breno Plentz completed the sweep for the Runnin' Bulldogs with straight-set wins over junior 
Sebastian Bromley, sophomore 
Pablo Juez Torres and sophomore 
Brooks Campbell, respectively.
 
The Eagles forfeited the sixth singles position and third doubles match with only five healthy players.
 
GWU started the team scoring by winning both doubles matches contested. Puga and Hogan held off Cucalon and Bromley, 6-4, while Scholl and Plentz toppled Juez Torres and Kontopoulos, 6-1.  
 
NCCU next visits local No. 20 Duke University on Sunday evening at 6 p.m.
