Sunday’s 13-5 Win Gives NCCU Baseball Series Sweep of NJIT

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University senior Andrew Valichka hit 3-for-4 with a solo home run, two RBI and three runs scored, while NCCU starting pitcher Devin Sweet registered 10 strikeouts as the Eagles defeated NJIT 13-5 on Sunday at Durham Athletic Park to capture the weekend series sweep.
 
NCCU sophomore Corey Joyce belted his team-high third home run of the season, while driving in two runs and scoring three times. Sophomore Ryan Decker went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, while junior Caleb Coyle drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double for the Eagles.
 
NCCU (5-2) held a slim 3-0 advantage before blowing the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 10-0 lead. NJIT (0-3) rallied for four runs in the seventh frame, but the deficit as too much to overcome.
 
The Eagles return to Durham Athletic Park on Tuesday (Feb. 27) to host Duke University at 4 p.m. Admission is free.
