DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University rallied to tie Wagner at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, but the Seahawks were able to come out on top in the extra frame, 7-6 after 10 innings at the Durham Athletic Park on Friday, Feb. 16.
NCCU (0-1) got the first hit of its 2018 schedule as
Mitchell McCrary (Mills Creek, N.C.) ripped a double to right field in the bottom of the first, but Wagner (1-0) got on the board first in the top of the fourth after a pair of costly errors that put the Seahawks ahead 2-0.
The Eagles answered back quickly as
Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) knotted the game with a two-run jolt to right-center in the bottom of the fourth to level the score at 2-2. That set the tone for things to come in the rest of the game as the Seahawks regained control on a three-run homer in the sixth off the bat of Will Johnson (Toms River, N.J.) that put the guests in front 5-2.
NCCU wouldn't go without a fight, as it rallied to tie with a two-run homer from
Evan Holland (Erial, N.J.) in the bottom of the eighth before
Zach Michalski (Belews Creek, N.C.) tied the game on a double down the left field line in the ninth to tie the game at 5-5. The Eagles were able to load the bases with just one out in the ninth, but couldn't bring in the winning run which sent the game to the extra frame.
The 10th inning brought more home runs to the game, starting with yet another two-run base-cleaner from Anthony Godino (Thornwood, N.Y.) to once again give Wagner a lead at 7-5. The Eagles had yet another opportunity to grab the win, as Joyce hit his second homer of the game and fifth total between the two teams to trim the deficit to one. The Eagles were able to once again bring a runner into scoring position with just one out on the board, but they couldn't push the run in, and Wagner came away with a 7-6 victory.
McCrary picked up three hits with a double for the Eagles, and Joyce drove in three RBI with his two home runs.
Godino and Freddy Sabido (Staten Island, N.Y.) led Wagner with two hits apiece. Neil Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) struck out seven over five innings in his start.
Weather permitting, the Eagles will play game two of the weekend series against Wagner on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park. Admission is free.
