DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore
Davide Callegari won in singles and doubles play for a second straight day as the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team wrapped up home play with a 5-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division win over Bethune-Cookman University Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles are 7-13 overall and finished league play at 2-2. The Wildcats departed town at 1-16 and 0-3. NCCU will qualify for the MEAC Championship in Norfolk, Virginia, in two weeks after missing the event a season ago.
Callegari joined sophomore classmate
Gabriel Cucalon and freshman
Theofanis Kontopoulos with victories in both singles and doubles action in the Eagles last home match of the season.
Cucalon (12-8) and Kontopoulos (11-8) won their No. 1 and No. 2 singles flights, respectively, in straight sets. Cucalon only lost two games in his 6-0, 6-2 conquest while Kontopoulos persevered 6-3, 6-4. The duo paces the conference in singles wins.
Callegari needed a little more work in claiming his 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win on the third court. He did level his overall singles record at 10-10 win the triumph.
Freshman
Pablo Juez Torres added NCCU's final singles win at No. 6. He was winning 6-3, 5-2 when his opponent had to retire.
The maroon and gray also clinched the first team point by winning the top two doubles draws. Cucalon and freshman
Maksym Konovalov had a 6-2 success in the top flight while Callegari and Kontopoulos posted a flawless 6-0 victory. Callegari and Kontopoulos lead the Eagles with a 10-5 doubles record.
NCCU concludes regular season play with a non-conference match at Campbell University on Thursday at 2 p.m.
