Duke Downs NCCU Men’s Tennis

DURHAM, N.C. – In a meeting of Bull City neighbors, the Duke University men's tennis team swept visiting North Carolina Central University, 7-0, on Sunday evening in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
 
The Blue Devils, who were nationally ranked earlier in the season, won two matches on the day to move over .500 at 5-3. Duke first beat the University of Tennessee, 4-0, in its early afternoon session.
 
Sophomore Gabriel Cucalon continued his string of highly competitive matches for the Eagles. Cucalon had his biggest test of the season yet, playing a nationally ranked opponent for the first time and he battled throughout to force a third set.
 
Freshman Nick Stachowiak (8-0) is 116th ranked individual in DI by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and he remained undefeated in his rookie season after narrowly knocking off Cucalon by a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) score.
 
Cucalon has played an impressive four consecutive three-set matches to start his second season in a maroon and gray uniform.
 
The Blue Devils won the other five singles matches in straight sets, losing just eight of 68 games. Duke secured the first team point by winning the second and third doubles matches.
 
NCCU (0-4 Overall) next hosts Liberty University on Friday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m.
