WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University achieved 13 top-five performances, including five event victories during the indoor track & field JDL College Team Challenge in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Thursday (Feb. 9) night.
Highlighting NCCU's efforts was a sweep of the women's 400-meter dash with
Jaleesa Smoot,
Kiana Seabrook and
Lovasia Thomas capturing the top three positions. Smoot won the race in 58.40 seconds, followed in Seabrook at 58.70 and Thomas at 59.31.
The NCCU men nearly pulled off a 1-2-3 sweep in the high jump. NCCU's
Omega Smalls won the event with a leap of 2.05 meters (6'9"), while
Armond Shaw placed third (1.95m) and
Mykol Branch fourth (1.90m).
The other three NCCU event winners were
Blake Hartsfield in the men's 60m dash (6.95),
Carlton Edwards, Jr. in the men's 400m dash (50.28) and
Deja Stevenson in the women's 60m hurdles (8.86).
Markiara Staten was the runner-up in the women's 60m dash (7.77),
Dominick Lemonious placed third in the men's 60m hurdles (8.48),
Jonathan Williams finished fourth in the men's 200m dash (22.61) and
Nateja Hale was fifth in the women's 60m hurdles (9.25).
The JDL College Team Challenge competition included teams from High Point, Davidson, Elon, Wake Forest, Citadel, College of Charleston, UNC Greensboro, Mount Olive, UNC Pembroke, Queens (N.C.), Southern Wesleyan and Flagler.
NCCU competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships starting on Thursday, Feb. 16 through Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Prince George's Sports Complex in Landover, Maryland. For more information, visit
