Coach Mack Writes Open Letter to NCCU Family

Jerry MackDear NCCU Family:

It has been one heck of a ride these last four years. The way the NCCU community has embraced my family and I is extraordinary. On behalf of the Mack family, I say "Thank You" to everyone that touched our lives during our time in Durham.

I first would like to thank the late Debra Saunders-White, who trusted me with leading a group of young men at NCCU. She allowed me to implement my vision of what I thought NCCU could become.

Ingrid Wicker McCree and Chancellor Johnson Akinleye trusted me on a daily basis to guide and lead a program. They are the epitome of great leadership. They provided a first-time head coach with guidance, support, and mentorship over my four years at NCCU.  The unwavering support of these two individuals put our program in position to be successful. Humble, supportive, and true team players, are just a few of the words that describe these individuals.

Our players, assistant coaches, and support staff have made my job the greatest on the planet. It was truly an honor to work with some of the most talented individuals I have ever met. You allowed me to coach you and trusted me to lead you. I never took my role as your leader lightly, and I was honored to learn from each and every one of you. Nobody will ever understand what we have battled through. It truly takes a family to overcome and love one another the way we do. No matter if it was spring, summer, or fall, we have conquered so many obstacles together and those moments will forever be with me.

Last, but certainly not least, is our fans, students, campus partners and alumni. We have cheered, cried, and became Champions together. You have made me feel like I have been a part of the Eagle Nation my entire life. We have put NCCU in a better place. We have changed the game-day atmosphere and been able to gain national exposure for our University. WE have embodied 'Teamwork makes the Dream Work.' We all should be proud of the championship trophies during these years, because everyone played a part in the success.

Once again, thanks to all of you for allowing me to be the gatekeeper of North Carolina Central University football. We have all built something special, and I have the utmost confidence you will not let this great program settle for anything less than greatness. The Macks will always be Eagles and we bleed maroon and gray.  I cannot wait to watch the Eagles continue to soar in the years to come!
