DOVER, Del. – North Carolina Central University kept the momentum rolling as the Eagles racked up their sixth-straight win in an 82-74 victory at Delaware State on Monday, Jan. 30 inside Alumni Hall.
Patrick Cole (Newark, N.J.) picked up where he left off and set the pace in the first half as he nailed his first four three-pointers and exploded for 19 points on his way to a game-high 28. Cole's shooting was contagious for the maroon and gray as NCCU (15-6, 6-1 MEAC) shot 47 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes. In the same time frame, the Eagles stymied DSU (5-18, 2-6 MEAC) to just 20 percent shooting as NCCU opened up a 17-point advantage at the break.
While the first half belonged to Cole, Devin Morgan (Chester, Va.) took over for the Hornets in the second half as he scored 18 points on his way to a team-high 25 points. However the defensive pressure from the Eagles was too much for the Hornets to overcome, as NCCU ripped away six steals, and forced DSU into 11 turnovers.
DSU was able to flip the switch in the second half as the Hornets picked up the pace and shot 56 percent from the floor and 53 percent from downtown as they made an effort to make their way back into the game, and DSU finished shooting 41 percent for the game.
NCCU kept their shooting pace in the second half as the Eagles finished shooting 47 percent from the floor, 40 percent from the arc and 76 from the charity stripe.
Kyle Benton (Long Beach, Calif.) chipped in 12 points and seven boards, and
Dajuan Graf (Charlotte, N.C.) contributed 12 points, five boards and a game-high six assists. The fourth Eagle to reach double-digits was
Rashaun Madison (Norfolk, Va.) with 10 points and five rebounds.
NCCU will return to the road this weekend as the Eagles head to Baltimore to play Morgan State and Coppin State on Saturday, Feb. 4 and Monday, Feb. 6, respectively.
