Lady Eagles Drop Final Game of 2016 at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Senior guard Morgan Jones led the visiting North Carolina Central University women's basketball team with 13 points in a 60-40 loss at Furman University on Friday evening in Timmons Arena.

The Paladins outscored the Lady Eagles in all four quarters in picking up their second straight home win in three days. Furman improved to 6-9 overall while NCCU fell to 1-10.

Jones has now scored in double figures for a seventh time this season and has been the NCCU's top scorer in five contests. Jones made a pair of 3-pointers and was 3-for-4 from the free throw line on her way to her 13 points.

Freshman forward Erin Houser followed with seven points and six rebounds. Sophomore guards Rodneysha Martin and Dominique Adams each tallied five points. Junior forward Kierona Morton topped the Lady Eagles with seven rebounds while Adams supplied three assists.

A Martin jumper at the 7:35 mark of the first quarter gave NCCU its first lead at 4-3. A three-pointer by Furman junior forward Cierra Carter catapulted the hosts back in front just over a minute later, but a Jones jumper as time was expiring in the first quarter kept the Lady Eagles within one possession at 11-9.

Jones nailed a 3-pointer with 8:01 to go in the second quarter to provide NCCU with its second and final lead of 13-12. The Paladins responded with a 10-0 run to recapture the lead and they stayed in front for the final 27 minutes of play.

Furman doubled up NCCU, 22-11, in the decisive second quarter to lead 33-20 at halftime. The Paladins narrowly outscored the visitors 12-10 and 15-10 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to win by 20.

Senior point guard Whitney Bunn led the victors with 14 points and five assists. Carter chipped in a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Paladins shot 36.1-percent from the field while holding the Lady Eagles to just 24.5% accuracy.

NCCU will conclude its non-conference portion of its schedule with a home tilt against USC Upstate on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
