Blow Buckets 28 in NCCU Road Loss at ODU


NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman guard Jada Blow cashed in 28 points to account for over half of the Lady Eagles points in an 83-52 non-conference road loss for the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team against host Old Dominion University on Sunday afternoon at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
 
The Lady Monarchs made over half of their shots to level their record a 2-2. The Lady Eagles suffered their second straight 31-point loss in slipping to 1-4 overall.
 
ODU shot 51.6-percent (33 of 64) from the field while NCCU missed its first eight shots in both halves on its way to shooting 29.4% (15 of 51).
 
Blow's made 7 of her 15 field goal attempts, including 5 of 9 attempts from 3-point distance, and 9 of 14 free throws. Her 28 points is the most points scored by a Lady Eagle in over two years since Racquel Davis netted 29 points against Winthrop University on Nov. 25, 2014. The Chicago, Illinois, products 28-point performance is also the most points scored by an NCCU freshman in the program's MEAC era.
 
To go along with her scoring, Blow grabbed four rebounds, handed out four assists and made two steals.
 
ODU started the contest on a 14-nil run and lead coast-to-coast. Senior guard Jennie Simms started the Lady Monarchs scoring with a 3-point play and she tallied two and-1 plays in the opening outburst.
 
Blow finally put the Lady Eagles on the scoreboard with a free throw at the 4:14 mark of the open period. Sophomore Dominique Adams made NCCU's first field goal at the 3:30 mark as the shot clock was expiring and the visitors trailed 18-7 after 10 minutes of play after shooting just 3 of 16 (18.8%) from the floor.
 
Blow had a big second quarter, scoring a dozen points and leading all players into the locker room with 13 points. Blow hit a trio of 3-pointers in the frame, but Old Dominion dominated in the paint, outscoring the Lady Eagles 22-0 in the first half to increase its lead to 15 at halftime, 36-21.
 
The Lady Monarchs went on another 12-0 surge to start the second half and fired at 57.6-percent for the final 20 minutes to secure their most lopsided win.
 
Simms and fellow senior forward Destinee Young paced Old Dominion with a pair of double doubles. Simms, who entered the contest ranked third in the NCAA in scoring at 26.7 points per game, and Young both supplied 17 points. Young pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and Simms followed with 10 boards.
 
ODU finished with a 52-4 dominance of the paint. The Lady Monarchs also forced NCCU into a season-high 22 mistakes that led to a 29-13 advantage on points off turnovers.
 
Senior Morgan Jones totaled seven points for the Lady Eagles. Sophomore Dominique Adams chipped in six points and secured a team-high seven rebounds.
 
NCCU will return home and host Wofford College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
