NCCU Drops Road Tilt at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Freshman guard Jada Blow led the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team with seven points and two assists in a 61-30 road loss to Campbell University on Tuesday.

The Camels held the Lady Eagles to a season-low point total on just 23.4-percent shooting while firing at 47.1-percent in coasting to the win. Campbell leveled its record at 2-2 while NCCU was unsuccessful at its attempt in slipping to 1-3.

Blow was just 1 of 10 from the field, but she was a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line, in leading the Lady Eagles in scoring for the second time in four contests. Junior Kierona Morton and sophomore Deja McCain were the only two NCCU players to make more than one field goal in scoring six and five points, respectively. Freshman Paulina Afriyie paced the Lady Eagles with six rebounds and McCain finished with five boards.

Junior Summer Price and senior Bria Emanuel led the victorious Camels with 13 points apiece.

Campbell took control of the game in the first half, going on a 19-0 run that spanned over nine minutes between the end of the first quarter and the start of the second quarter.

A five-footer by Morton and a reverse layup by sophomore Dominique Adams provided NCCU with an initial 4-1 lead before the Camels went on its decisive run. The unanswered 19-point rally featured 10 points in the paint and 5 of 6 made free throws.

McCain ended the NCCU scoreless streak with an old-fashion, 3-point play at the 6:46 mark of the second half. Moments later, Blow drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing on an assist by senior Morgan Jones to pull the Lady Eagles within a dozen at 22-10. However, Campbell finished the period on a 7-2 surge to push its halftime advantage to 17 at 29-12.

The Camels shot well, going 11 of 25 (44%) before the midway break, but heated up even more in the third quarter. Campbell knocked down nine of its 14 shot attempts (64.3%) in the period to outscore the Lady Eagles 22-7 and extend its lead to 51-19.

NCCU had its best period in the fourth, outscoring the Camels 11-10. Morton led the Lady Eagles in the final stanza with a pair of layups.

Campbell had more rebounds, 38-30, and dominated points in the paint, 32-14, while committing six less turnover, 20-14, to control most facets of the game.

NCCU will return from Thanksgiving and play at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m.
