Football Team Captain Earns Athletic and Academic Honors in November


DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University football junior Carl Jones has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for November 2015 in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.
 
A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Jones anchored the Eagles' offensive line that paved the way for an average of 35.0 points and 382.7 yards of total offense per game, including 150.7 yards rushing and 232.0 yards passing in November. NCCU won all three games that month, including a triumph over No. 13 North Carolina A&T, to close out the season with seven straight victories to earn a share of the MEAC Championship for the second year in-a-row.
 
The accolades rolled in for Jones in the 11th month.
 
On the field, he was named to the All-MEAC First Team as the league's top center. During his junior campaign, Jones started all 11 games and was twice named MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Week (Oct. 3 and Nov. 7). In 757 plays, he graded out at 92 percent of blocking assignments with 63 pancake blocks, while only allowing one sack. The team captain also serves as a representative on NCCU Football Leadership Council.
 
Off the field, Jones was voted to 2015 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District™ Football Team as Division I First-Team honoree in District III (North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia). He was also selected as a finalist for the STATS Doris & Eddie Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, recognizing an FCS student-athlete who excels not only on the field and in the classroom, but in the community and beyond.
 
A junior business major with a concentration in accounting, Jones boasts an overall grade point average of 3.76. He serves on the Executive Board of the NCCU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), working with community engagement.
 
Jones is a member of the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc., Research Triangle Park Chapter; the North Carolina Association of CPA's (student member); the Phi Eta Sigma National Honors Society; the Centennial Scholars Program; the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.-Tau Psi Chapter; and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as a Huddle Leader.
 
After graduating from NCCU, Jones plans to attend graduate school for either a master's degree in taxation or a master's degree in public administration.
