Senior Relief Pitcher Records Six Saves in March; Boasts 3.934 GPA


DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University senior relief pitcher Gavin Guarrera has been named the Nationwide Insurance NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for March 2013 in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments on the baseball field and in the classroom.

A native of Webster, N.Y., Guarrera recorded six saves and a win in seven appearances during the month of March. In 12 innings of relief on the mound, he surrendered just one run while striking out seven batters.

Guarrera opened the month by allowing just one run in 6.2 innings of relief against rival North Carolina A&T to earn the win in a 13-inning victory. He went on to earn saves in his remaining six appearances in March.

The senior hurler’s eight saves this season is tied for the lead in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and tied for 24th among NCAA Division I pitchers.

Guarrera boasts a 3.934 grade point average as a criminal justice major. He posted a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall 2012 semester and was recently recognized as a member of the Tau Sigma National Honor Society. He is scheduled to graduate from NCCU in May.
