DURHAM, N.C. – Eight North Carolina Central University student-athletes earned recognition by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) for achieving academic success as they were among the 69 student-athletes from the conference’s 13 institutions to earn 2012 Baseball All-Academic honors.
Representing NCCU, senior Etienne Farquharson (Business, 3.97 GPA) leads the way followed up by Glenn Frye (Computer Science-3.73 GPA), Carter Williamson (Business, 3.55 GPA), Sam Fulmer (Nursing, 3.22 GPA), Ross Plummer (Business, 3.29 GPA), Tyson Simpson (Public Administration, 3.29 GPA), Troy Marrow (Recreation, 3.17 GPA), and Dylan Drayton (Criminal Justice, 3.00 GPA).
“These young men epitomize what it means to be student-athletes,” said NCCU head baseball coach Jim Koerner. “I am extremely proud of their academic accomplishments.”
Farquharson and Williamson earned Capital One Academic All-District III honors voted on by CoSIDA (Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America) to give the duo their second recognition for their achievements in the classroom.
The criteria to earn recognition from the MEAC was for the student-athlete to be a sophomore, junior, and senior with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average as well we transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year are eligible for All-Academic accolades.
“I congratulate our baseball student-athletes who have maintained a 3.0 or better grade point average during this academic school year,” said Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas. In addition to recognizing the student-athletes achievements, I also applaud the athletic academic support staffs, coaching staffs and all persons who contributed to the academic success of these student-athletes."
NCCU begins the journey for its first NCAA Division I title as the maroon and gray take on Maryland Eastern Shore in the 2012 MEAC Championship at approximately 9:30 p.m. at Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, Va.
