DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University junior outfielder Luis Diaz was named to the first team on the 2012 MEAC Baseball All-Conference squad the league announced Wednesday.
 
The Geneva, N.Y. product led the Eagles batting .354 in his first season at NCCU and set a new modern day single season record with 62 hits.  Diaz also recorded nine doubles, four triples, four home runs and 29 RBI.  He finished the year 7-for-10 in stolen bases along with a .460 on-base percentage.  Diaz placed himself in the league’s top ten in batting average (sixth), hits (sixth), runs scored (sixth), and home runs (tied for fourth).
 
“Luis has had a great year,” said NCCU head baseball coach Jim Koerner.  “He certainly deserves the recognition that he is receiving.  He has worked extremely hard for this and I am so proud of him for achieving this accomplishment.”
 
The transfer from Monroe Community College earned MEAC Player of the Week honors during the week of April 1 when he batted an astonishing 7-for-11 (.636) at-the-plate with eight runs, a double, three triples, an inside-the-park home run and five RBI in the series sweep over Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Fla.
 
In conference action, Diaz was No. 1 on the squad batting .365 that included six doubles, three triples, a home run and 16 RBI in 23 games played.  He was also 5-for-7 in stolen bases.  
 
Diaz and the Eagles will look to add to their five-game winning streak to end the regular season when the maroon and gray compete in the 2012 MEAC Baseball Championship in the final game of the day on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against the third seed from the North Division, Maryland Eastern Shore from Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, Va.
