Willie Calvin has been named the Nationwide Insurance NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for February 2012 in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments on the men’s track and field team and in the classroom.
During the month of February, the junior transfer out of Greenville, Miss., made huge strides for the men’s track and field program at NCCU. On the third of the month, while competing at the New Balance Invitational in Manhattan, N.Y., Calvin tied his career-best with a 2.18-meter jump (7-feet, 1.75-inches) during the men’s high jump.
Closing out the indoor track and field regular season, Calvin led the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with his 2.18m leap.
To end the month of February and the indoor track and field season, Calvin competed in NCCU’s first Division I MEAC indoor track and field championship in Landover, Md., Feb. 16-18. During the championship high jump event Calvin brought home the Eagles first and only gold with his 2.16m jump.
Calvin is a physical education major. During his first semester at NCCU (fall 2011), he maintained a 3.39 GPA while enrolled in 18 credit hours. He transferred to NCCU from Hinds Community College in Raymond, Miss.
