NCCU STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH: RAY WILLIS

Willis scored in double-figures in 6-of-7 games in January

DURHAM, N.C. (NCCUEaglePride.com) – North Carolina Central University junior guard Ray Willis (Atlanta, Ga.) has been named the Nationwide Insurance NCCU Student-Athlete of the month for his outstanding efforts with the men’s basketball program in the month of January.

The junior scored in double-figures in six-of-seven contests that included a career-high 28 points against Delaware State University on Jan. 28.  It was in that ballgame that Willis tied his teammate Landon Clement (Raleigh, N.C.), former Eagles C.J. Wilkerson and Willie Jennette for the third-most free throws made in a game in school history as he went 15-for-19.

Willis averaged a team-high 15.7 points per game that also included shooting 7-for-18 from three-point range (38.9 percent), while grabbing an average of 6.4 rebounds per contest.  Willis also racked up 20 assists and 10 steals in the first month of the new year.

NCCU recorded two big home victories over Bethune-Cookman (69-64) and Maryland Eastern Shore (77-46) where the Eagles broke out of three-game losing streak.  It was against the Hawks where Willis went 4-for-7 from three-point range in scoring 16 points that allowed the Eagles to cruise to the win.

On the season Willis has maintained his position in the MEAC’s top 10 in scoring as he is currently seventh in the conference averaging 15.8 points per contest.
