FIVE EAGLES TO PLAY IN FCS SENIOR SCOUT BOWL ON SATURDAY IN MYRTLE BEACH

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Five North Carolina Central University football seniors are slated to compete in the 2012 FCS Senior Scout Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 5 p.m. inside Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Announced to the South roster are NCCU seniors Malik Cromartie, a cornerback from Elizabethtown, N.C.; Geovonie Irvine, a wide receiver from Durham, N.C.; Xavier Proctor, a defensive end from Ellicott City, Md.; Detwan Robinson, a tight end from Lewisberry, Pa.; and Stephen Young, a defensive tackle from Woodbridge, Va.  NCCU senior safety Rickie Hubbard, a native of Atlanta, Ga., was also selected to participate in the bowl game, but has opted not to play.

Game tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students (under 18 years old). A live internet video stream will also be available for fans to watch the contest at www.FCSseniorbowl.com.

Cromartie topped the MEAC and ranked third among national leaders in the NCAA-Division I-FCS with 16 passes defended, an average of 1.45 per game. He also matched the conference-high and tied for ninth among FCS leaders in interceptions with five picks for 90 return yards. Cromartie also contributed 54 total tackles (38 solo), including 2.0 hits for a loss. He blocked two kicks, including a rejected field goal attempt in overtime to seal a homecoming victory over Delaware State.

Irvine capped his NCCU career as the second-leading receiver in school history with 171 catches for 2,322 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also became one of only seven Eagles in NCCU history to reach 3,000 all-purpose yards, finishing with 3,342 yards and 18 total touchdowns. During his senior season, he contributed a team-high 33 receptions for 402 yards and three trips to the end zone, while also returning a punt for a touchdown.

Proctor, a Second Team All-MEAC selection, ranked second on the squad with 10.5 hits for a loss and 4.0 sacks, as part of his 42 total tackles (21 solo). He also recorded two pass break-ups.

Robinson was a key run-blocker for the Eagles and made a bunch of clutch receptions. Among his 11 catches for 113 yards during his senior campaign, he scored three touchdowns. None was bigger than a fourth-down grab in the closing seconds at Morgan State, which he rumbled for 26 yards through a host of defenders for the game-winning score.

Young, a First Team All-MEAC recipient and Beyond Sports College Network All America Honorable Mention, ranked third in the conference and tied for ninth in the NCAA Division I-FCS with 15.5 tackles for a loss, and tied for third in the league with 5.5 sacks. He also recorded 42 total tackles (21 solo) with a forced fumble.

Hubbard ranked third on the team with 64 total tackles, including 1.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. He also contributed four pass break-ups and a forced fumble.

These seniors helped the Eagles earn their first winning season since 2007 with a 6-5 overall record. NCCU posted a 5-3 mark in the conference to finish in a tie for third place in the MEAC standings, after being picked to finish ninth in the league’s preseason poll.
