Phil Steele's 2011 Preseason All-MEAC Team
CLEVELAND,Ohio- (NCCUEaglePride.com) – In the first preseason for North Carolina Central University as its move to the Division I level is nearly complete, four gridiron student-athletes were named to the Preseason All-MEAC Team in Phil Steele’s FCS College Football Preview Magazine.
Headlining the group of four Eagles is junior Arthur Goforth by making the first team as kick returner, while redshirt junior wide receiver Geovonie Irvine, redshirt senior offensive lineman James Frye, and senior linebacker Roger Stewart all made the second team.
The electrifying Goforth (5-7, 165, Columbia, S.C.) was one of top kick returners in the FCS last season with two touchdowns, the longest of which came against Winston-Salem State where he went 97 yards to swing the momentum in NCCU’s favor. He finished the season with 31 returns for 769 yards averaging 24.8 yards a return. The junior also returned punts, registering 12 returns for 171 yards averaging 14.2 yards a clip. He’s the leading returning rusher after carrying the ball 38 times for 192 yards and three touchdowns during his sophomore season.
Irvine (5-7, 156, Durham, N.C.) returns as the top receiver on the NCCU roster where he finished the 2010 season with 53 catches for 758 yards and five touchdowns averaging 14.3 yards per catch. He looks to continue that trend under first-year head coach Henry Frazier’s new offensive scheme.
Frye (6-2, 300, Catawba, N.C.) returns for his final season at NCCU and looks to continue his role as a true leader of the offensive line at the center position.
Stewart (6-1, 226, Charlotte, N.C.) is the leading returning tackler to the Eagle defense as he finished the 2010 season with 50 total tackles, including 11 tackles for a loss. He recorded one interception which he returned 83 yards for a touchdown against Johnson C. Smith and racked up three sacks and recovered two fumbles.
