DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University junior
Braden Cox has been named the Nationwide Insurance NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for May 2011 in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in the classroom and on the course as a member of the men’s golf team.
The Summerfield, N.C. native finished among the top 10 on the individual leaderboard at the 25th PGA Minority Collegiate Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla. On May 6, Cox used two birdies and an eagle to post a career-low 1-under-par 71 to position himself in third place after the opening round. He tallied scores of 74 and 78 on Saturday and Sunday to finish the national championship event in a tie for ninth place.
Cox completed his junior campaign with a career-best scoring average of 78.5, along with four top 10 finishes.
As team captain, Cox also set a standard in the classroom. The criminal justice major posted a 3.666 grade point average in the fall 2010 semester and a 3.294 GPA in the recently completed spring semester, improving his overall GPA to 3.250.
