DURHAM, N.C. -
North Carolina Central University volleyball player Shantel Moore has been selected as the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for September 2009. The junior outside hitter is being honored for her outstanding achievement in the classroom, on the volleyball court and in the community.
The Westmoreland, Jamaica native has started in 23 of the Eagles' 25 matches this season. She has recorded four double-doubles this season and ranks second on the team in kills with 183. Moore has made an instant impact on defense for the Eagles, where she ranks second in blocks with 54 and third in digs with 143.
Moore put on an outstanding performance during the month of September. She notched a career-high 16 kills against Delaware State and a career-high six assists against Campbell. She also recorded three double-digit kill performances and one double-digit dig performance. She earned her second double-double of the season against Campbell with 12 kills and 11 digs.
Throughout the month, Moore started in all but two matches for the Eagles and helped lead them to a 4-12 record during the month of September, including four of their seven victories this season. She notched 114 kills, 17 assists, 11 service aces, 76 digs and 35 blocks in September alone.
Her impressive abilities on offense and defense have earned her two All-Tournament honors, both during the month of September. She was named to the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup All-Tournament Team after hammering a .184 with 26 kills, 22 digs, 10 assists and nine blocks. She also earned her second double-double of the season during that tournament.
She followed that performance with a similar one during the NCCU Volleyball Tournament, where she was named to the All-Tournament team, alongside teammates Belinda Behncke-Biney and Avaniki Campbell. She hit .151 in four matches with 44 kills, 22 digs, four service aces and seven blocks.
Standing at an even 6-0, the junior has used her size to her advantage. The physical education major has helped lead the Eagles to a 7-18 record this season and has given them the strength they needed on the net, allowing the Eagles to rack up an impressive 183 total blocks this season.
